WhisperU alternatives: what to use if you need a Mac or more than 7 free days

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~12 min

Potok turns speech into text in 33 languages, including English and Russian.

WhisperU alternatives are sought by people held back by its limitations: the program works only on Windows, recognizes speech offline and gives just a 7-day free trial without a card, after which a paid license is needed. The options include cloud services with a more generous free plan and offline programs for the Mac. Potok (potok.now) gives 2500 words per week for free, with no limit in days.

WhisperU's seven days of free access run out quickly, and the program works only on Windows: those who have a Mac or need a long free test before buying have to look for a replacement even before the trial has expired. After that a paid license begins, and it is worth deciding whether to pay right away or look at other options first before the trial access ends, not after.

Why people look for a WhisperU replacement

The first reason is the platform. WhisperU works only on Windows, and for those who use a Mac or switch between a desktop and a laptop on different systems, the program simply does not fit: it has no macOS version.

The second is the length of free access. Seven days without a card is a trial, not a permanent free plan: you can try the program, but you cannot dictate with it for free week after week, unlike services with a reduced but permanent free tier.

The third reason is the recognition principle itself. WhisperU works offline, on the device itself, and this is a deliberate choice for those who care that the sound never leaves the computer. But offline mode has a flip side: speed and stability depend on the processor of the particular computer rather than on one stated figure, and on weak hardware recognition can be noticeably slower.

The fourth is the seller's legal form. WhisperU is sold by a self-employed developer, not a company: for private dictation this does not matter, but those who need a closing document for accounting from a legal entity rather than from an individual should clarify this before paying.

Finally, the developer does not separately describe the recognition quality for Russian speech anywhere, neither with a number nor with a comparison to other programs, so it can only be judged by your own dictation experience, not by claims on the website.

What to check in a replacement

  1. Platform. Make sure the new program really supports the system you need, both Windows and macOS if you work on different devices, not only the one WhisperU had.

  2. Where speech is recognized. Offline processing on the device needs no internet and does not send sound outside, but it depends on the power of your computer. Cloud recognition has more stable speed but needs a network and means sending the sound to a server.

  3. The real free limit. WhisperU's seven days are a one-time trial. Other programs may have permanent but reduced free access: it is important to understand whether the limit is counted in minutes, words or days before comparing options with each other.

  4. Payment from Russia. Check whether the payment goes through in rubles directly or whether a foreign card and an intermediary will be needed: this can turn out to be as decisive as the program's features.

  5. The seller's legal entity. For personal use this is usually unimportant, but if you need a closing document for an organization, find out in advance who issues the invoice: a self-employed person, a sole proprietor or a company.

  6. Personal dictionary. The ability to add rare terms, names and titles by hand noticeably reduces the number of repeated recognition errors over time; some programs have no such feature at all.

  7. Text insertion into any app. Check whether the new program works with a single hotkey in email, a messenger and documents at once, and not only in the one window it was originally made for.

  8. Response after dictation. The difference in how fast the recognized text appears on screen is noticeable on long dictation: the shorter the delay, the more naturally speaking and writing feel like one action rather than two separate steps with a pause between them.

Where Potok will not replace WhisperU

For those who chose WhisperU precisely for its offline mode, Potok will not fit: it is a cloud service, recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work at all without the internet. Where the network is unavailable or the sound must never leave the computer, you need an offline program, not a cloud one, regardless of where its servers are physically located.

The payment model also differs. WhisperU offers a one-time lifetime license with no repeat payments, while Potok has only a subscription with a free tier of 2500 words per week: for those who on principle do not want recurring payments, a one-time license is more convenient in the long run.

Potok also has no mobile apps for Android and iPhone; there are versions for Windows, macOS and Linux. And it does not understand voice commands for editing text: it inserts what you said and does not edit what was written earlier. A similar review is in the article GigaType or Potok, and the general catalog of replacements is in the section Wispr Flow alternative.
