How to add Russian speech recognition in Windows 10 Home

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~8 min

Potok turns speech into text in 33 languages, including English and Russian.

There is no official way to add Russian speech recognition to the voice input of Windows 10 Home. The reason is not the Home or Pro edition: Russian is not in the list of supported languages in either of them. The classic Windows Speech Recognition has an even shorter list of languages, and Russian is not there either. The only official route is to move to Windows 11. Instead of the system dictation you can try Potok (potok.now).

If you cannot turn on Russian speech recognition in the voice input of Windows 10 Home, the reason is not that it is the home edition rather than Pro. There is no official way to add the Russian language to this function in any edition of Windows 10.

How to add Russian language recognition in Windows 10 Home

There is no direct solution for Windows 10: no matter how long you search in the language and region settings, an item that adds Russian to the voice input list will not appear there, because this list is fixed at the level of the system version, not the edition. The only officially supported way to get Russian for voice input is to move to Windows 11, where voice typing supports Russian. If moving to Windows 11 is not an option yet, it is better to accept plainly that voice input for Russian text on this machine is temporarily unavailable, rather than spend time searching for a hidden setting that does not exist.

Why the Windows 10 Home edition is not the reason

The system edition, Home, Pro or any other, determines a set of features such as remote access or group policies, but not the list of voice input languages: it is the same for all editions of one Windows version. The official list of languages supported by Win+H in Windows 10 is shorter than in Windows 11, and Russian is not in it whatever edition is installed. The same applies to the older function, the classic Windows Speech Recognition (Win+Ctrl+S): its list of languages is even narrower than that of Win+H, and Russian is not there in any edition either.

What to consider before changing the system

When it is worth looking at another program

There is no official workaround for Windows 10, and it is not a question of settings: Microsoft simply did not include Russian in the list of supported languages for this version of voice input. If you do not want to wait for a move to Windows 11, you can try Potok (potok.now) instead of the system dictation: it works on Windows, macOS and Linux.
