How to dictate text in Word in Russian: 3 ways and how to choose

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~6 min

Potok turns speech into text in 33 languages, including English and Russian.

There are three ways to dictate text in Word. 1) The Dictate button in Microsoft 365 (needs a subscription and internet). 2) Built-in Win+H works in any window, understands Russian only in Windows 11 and has no personal dictionary. 3) A separate app, for example Potok, which dictates into any app, not only Word.

Way 1. The Dictate button in Word (Microsoft 365)

If you have Microsoft 365, Word has built-in dictation:

  1. Open a document and go to the Home tab.
  2. On the right, find the Dictate button (a microphone icon).
  3. Choose the language, Russian, and speak. The text is typed into the document.

Pros: nothing to install, it is right in Word. Cons: it works only with a Microsoft 365 subscription and internet, and only inside Office apps. It will not help in a browser or a messenger.

Way 2. Built-in Win+H (Russian only in Windows 11)

Windows system voice input works in Word and anywhere else. Russian is available in it only in Windows 11: in Windows 10, the list of voice input languages does not include Russian.

  1. Put the cursor in the Word document.
  2. Press Win + H to open the voice input panel.
  3. Speak, and the text is inserted into the document.

Pros: free, no subscription, works in any app. Cons: it needs internet (recognition runs in the Microsoft cloud), there is no personal dictionary for your terms, and on long texts you should check the quality of Russian on your own examples.

Way 3. A separate app: a Russian model in any app

If you dictate in Russian a lot and not only in Word, a separate app built for Russian speech is more convenient.

Potok works by hotkey in any program: put the cursor in Word (or in a browser, mail, a messenger, an IDE), hold Ctrl+Space, speak, release, and the text lands in the document. Recognition runs on its own model tuned for Russian (names, terms, Russian and English mixed together). The Pro subscription has a personal dictionary for your terms.

You do not need a Microsoft 365 subscription: Potok is not tied to Office and works the same everywhere. The first 14 days give full access for free (no card needed), then Free is 2500 words per week and Pro is 690 ₽ per month (499 ₽ per month when paid yearly). Data stays in Russia; for business there is 152-FZ mode and on-prem.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn on dictation in Word?

In Microsoft 365, open the Home tab, click the Dictate button (the microphone), choose Russian and speak. You need a Microsoft 365 subscription and internet. An alternative without a subscription is the system Win+H or a separate voice input app.

Why is there no Dictate button in Word?

The button appears only in Microsoft 365 by subscription. It may be missing in older versions of Office bought separately. In that case, use Win+H or a voice input app.

How do I dictate into Word in Russian without a Microsoft 365 subscription?

Use the system Win+H (free, needs internet, Russian only in Windows 11, no personal dictionary) or a separate app built for Russian speech, for example Potok, which works in Word and in any other app by hotkey.

Which way of dictating into Word is the most accurate in Russian?

There are no independent accuracy comparisons between the ways, so there is no clear answer. Word's built-in dictation and Win+H use Microsoft engines, where Russian is not the main profile. Separate apps like Potok are built on a model tuned for Russian speech and have a personal dictionary. It is better to compare on your own texts during a trial period.
