Voice input in ClickUp: built-in dictation and Potok

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~7 min

Potok turns speech into text in 33 languages, including English and Russian.

ClickUp has its own dictation, Talk to Text in the separate Brain MAX app: you hold the fn key or your own assigned key, and the text appears in any field on the computer, not only in ClickUp. It is available on all plans, but as a time-limited trial period. Potok (potok.now) solves a similar task without such a limit: 14 days of full access without a card, then 2500 words per week free.

Voice input in ClickUp works not as a button in the service itself but through the separate Brain MAX app: hold a key, speak, and the text appears in any field on the computer. An overview of the topic is on the page about voice input in apps; here we cover how it works in ClickUp and how Potok differs in the same role.

How Talk to Text works in ClickUp Brain MAX

ClickUp's own dictation is called Talk to Text and works not as a button in the web interface but through a separate app, ClickUp Brain MAX for computers. To dictate text, you need to hold the fn key or your own key assigned in advance; recording starts, AI recognizes the speech and turns it into text, which is inserted into any text field on the computer, not only in ClickUp itself.

The Talk to Text settings are in the “Voice notes” section: there you set a dictionary of names and terms, the language of the result and your own hotkey instead of fn. The feature is available on all ClickUp plans, including the free one, but as a time-limited trial period, not a permanent capability.

Separately from Talk to Text, ClickUp has Voice Clips. This is not text dictation but voice messages: an audio recording is attached to a task comment and, when the AI ClickApp module is turned on in the workspace, is automatically transcribed into text.

How Potok differs from Talk to Text

Potok solves a similar task: it inserts dictated text into the active field of any app with a hotkey, Ctrl+Space by default, which can also be changed in the settings. The difference is in the access conditions: Talk to Text in ClickUp is a time-limited trial period on any plan, while Potok gives 14 days of full access without a card, and after that 2500 words per week free on one device or Pro without a limit.

Potok places punctuation and capital letters automatically, and speech is recognized by a cloud model trained for Russian speech, including terms and mixed Russian text with English words.

When Talk to Text is enough

If Brain MAX is already installed and the Talk to Text trial period has not ended yet, a separate dictation program for ClickUp is not needed: the feature already inserts text into any field on the computer. Switching to Potok makes sense when the trial period has expired or you need dictation without a time limit. A similar question, built-in input against a separate program, is covered for Yandex Tracker (in Russian) too.

Potok is a cloud service: recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without an internet connection. It has no voice commands, and no apps for Android and iPhone, so you can dictate only from a computer. A personal dictionary of terms and snippets are available only on Pro.
