Punctuation in voice input in 1C:Enterprise

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~6 min

Potok turns speech into text in 33 languages, including English and Russian.

In 1C:Enterprise you can dictate in ordinary phrases: you do not have to say “zapyataya” (comma) and “tochka” (period) separately if recognition places punctuation itself. In Potok (potok.now) this happens automatically, the default hotkey is Ctrl+Space, and the response time is about 0.4 seconds.

In accounting programs the text is usually short, but punctuation is still needed in it: periods at the end of notes, commas in lists. Before, this meant saying “zapyataya” (comma) and “tochka” (period) separately when dictating. Now this is not required if the recognition tool places the marks itself.

The short way

It is enough to say the whole phrase, without service words for punctuation marks. In Potok, periods, commas and capital letters are placed automatically during speech recognition, so what you said gets into the 1C:Enterprise field already formatted. The default hotkey is Ctrl+Space: hold the key, say the phrase, release, and the text appears where the cursor is, with a Potok response time of about 0.4 seconds. You do not need to say “zapyataya” (comma) or “tochka” (period) separately here: they are superfluous where punctuation is already placed by itself.

An option for a complex task

When the text has many specific terms, numeric values, or you need a structure of several items, automatic punctuation alone is not enough. It handles marks inside a sentence, but it does not place line breaks, lists and other formatting: Potok has no voice commands for this, so such elements are added by hand after the text is inserted. Specific terms and names that often occur in accounting entries are recognized more accurately if you set up a personal dictionary for them, which is in the Pro plan. If a term is still recognized wrongly, it too will have to be fixed by hand, like an ordinary typo.

When the task is easier without voice

For short formalized values, such as codes, numbers and single digits, typing by hand is often faster than dictating and then checking the result. Potok is a cloud service: speech recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without an internet connection. It has no voice commands for editing text, and there are no mobile apps: dictation is available only from a computer. A similar review exists for 1C:Accounting (in Russian), and a general overview is in the article on voice input in apps.
